What’s that list of?
Oh this – my list of 2017 New Year’s resolutions.
It looks fairly lengthy – do you always write that many?
Oh yes, there always eight of them – every year the same.
That’s incredible – every year you come up with another eight resolutions?
No – “every year the same” meaning every year the same eight resolutions – lose weight, learn another language, be more organised, pay off the credit card –
Have you been carrying them over every year?
Oh yes. Where was I? Pay off the credit card, learn the ukulele –
Whoa, stop there. Doesn’t it get you down that every year to make the same resolutions and they don’t happen?
Of course it does – but a year’s a long time and I never seem to keep the momentum up. What else can I do?
Have you thought about not making them over the course of a year? For instance with “being more organised” what if you made plans for that over 12 weeks instead of 12 months? It still gives you time to get things done –
But it’s quicker for me to see results. I like that. And what about in those 12 weeks saying when I’ll have cleared out the garage. And the shed. And the spare room too.
Good idea – that way you can keep your momentum by experiencing real progress.
And then the next 12 weeks I could start on a foreign language course. But I’ll never pay my credit card off in a 12 week slot though.
No but you could set yourself a target for the 12 weeks. Or even better, when you’re organising yourself better set up a system to make sure that you pay a certain amount each month.
That could work but there is another problem with this – I’ve got eight resolutions and there aren’t 96 weeks in 2017.
Perhaps another problem you’ve had is having too many resolutions. Instead of spreading yourself too thinly over eight concentrate on four that you really want to achieve. After all you can’t achieve less than you have done.
That’s very true. Any other advice?
More a request – please don’t learn the ukulele, the world really doesn’t need more ukulele players.
